ERCOT: Clean Power Plan Will Raise Costs, Lower Reliability

ERCOT, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, has studied the EPA plan to lower CO₂ emissions from power plants across the nation. They find that implementation of the plan will result in higher costs to consumers and lowered reliability of electrical supply in the State of Texas (read details here). This is pretty much what we expected—after all, the politicians in Texas are demanding a political response to anything the EPA would propose. But, if ERCOT is right, consumers should be looking to install their own private microgrids and provide their own form of “energy independence.” Here, independence is defined as being free from higher prices and lower reliability—and politically-motivated decisions.
