Gold edges lower as dollar cuts losses after US data

Spot gold was down 0.3 per cent at $1,205.28 an ounce by 2:43 p.m. EDT (1843 GMT), while US gold futures for June delivery settled down 0.4 per cent at $1,204.10 an ounce.

The market awaited a speech on Friday by Fed Chair Janet Yellen.

Gold prices have struggled to break out of a $1,170-$1,230 an ounce range since mid-March, hamstrung by uncertainty over the timing of a US rate rise.

Silver was up 0.2 per cent at $17.12 an ounce, while platinum was down 0.3 per cent at $1,150.58 an ounce.

Palladium rose 0.8 per cent to $778.22 an ounce.
