Sensex extends gains, Nifty eyes 9850; HDFC Bank, ICICI lead

Equity benchmarks extended gains in afternoon, with the Sensex rising 188.50 points to 31,470.98, aided by HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank that gained 1-1.5 percent.

The 50-share NSE Nifty was up 63.55 points at 9,832.50 while the Nifty Midcap gained 1.2 percent and Smallcap rose 1.8 percent.

About three shares advanced for every share falling on the BSE.
